The Newest Banksy: A Call for Action

According to several news articles online, such as one by The Art Newspaper, a new text yielding Banksy mural has appeared in London on the 26th of April 2019 in support of climate change activists Extinction Rebellion. Though Banksy has not confirmed it is his work, Extinction Rebellion used twitter to claim its authenticity and authorities are working to verify it.

The supposed Banksy artwork (above) bears the words ‘From this moment despair ends and tactics begin’, and shows a small child holding an Extinction Rebellion sign, alongside a shovel and a small plant.

Whether or not this is in fact an original Banksy, this activist artwork utilises an empathy inducing image of a child along with a call to action. It asks the viewer to make a decision on how they are responding to the climate crisis – imploring them to not just sit back and ‘despair’ but instead do something, ANYTHING really. Make a plan, a decisive choice in how the future of the planet plays out, not only for them but for their children and their children’s children.

Activist text artworks like this which appear suddenly, unexpectedly and get worldwide attention (thank-you Banksy) are some of my favourites. This work has been shared on a global scale thanks to the internet – and I’m pretty happy about it.
